Win 24-12

Perfect playing conditions at So Kon Po set the stage for the long awaited return of Plan A in their pre-season friendly against University. Much like T3’s match the week before, it was a game of thirds with two alternating referees to spice things up. A solid Typhoons team lined up looking to put the last few weeks of training into practice and get the momentum rolling.

The first third saw a pretty even contest with both teams getting the measure of one another but with the Typhoons controlling more of the ball and getting the first points through some consistent grinding from the forwards. The backs were able to put some good speed and distance on the ball, stretching the Uni defence every time. The game opened up even more in the second third with the Phoons controlling the momentum and racking up a few more tries, though did let one try through after a breakaway from some scrappy play. Things fell apart somewhat in the last third with constant pressure and a bit of fatigue causing frustration and leading to a host of penalties against us. Uni controlled all the ball and trapped us in our 22 for most of the third, eventually leading to a Uni try. There was a strong defensive effort from the whole team, though we were lucky the ‘friendly’ nature of the match meant no cards were shown. The criss-crossing of both football and rugby lines on the pitch caused a fair bit of confusion, though Nathan used it to his defensive advantage on the ‘try-line’.

Despite the limited set-piece training both the line-outs and scrums were reliable and competitive, setting up some good phase ball for the team to work off. With many positives to take away and a clear idea of areas to develop we’ll take the win and keep the momentum going!
